Job Description

The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the world's busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Department's main goal is to provide fire protection, emergency medical care, and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs. FDNY members are sworn to serve and protect life and property and the Department works to continually educate the public in fire, life safety and disaster preparedness, along with enforcing public safety codes. Since its inception in 1865, FDNY has helped lead efforts to make New York the safest big city in the nation. This accomplishment requires a steadfast and daily commitment to maintaining the Department's core values.

The Bureau of Fire Prevention cultivates a safer city for its citizens, visitors and first responders by preventing loss of life and property damage from fire and other emergencies. We accomplish this 24/7 by identifying fire and life safety hazards; creating, revising, and enforcing the New York City Fire Code; reviewing plans for critical systems designed to protect and alert building occupants; licensing qualified companies to install and service fire protection equipment and systems; certifying individuals to monitor fire safety conditions; and educating individuals and businesses about fire safety. In addition, the Bureau of Fire Prevention is critical partner with the Bureau of Fire Operations (Firefighters) and Bureau of Fire Investigations (Fire Marshals), providing assistance and guidance during post-fire incidents and investigations; and coordinating with other City agencies on matters concerning fire and life safety. The Bureau consists of Fire Protection Inspectors, lawyers, engineers, explosives experts, and Fire Officers work together to save lives in New York City.

The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY), seeks two (2) full time Assistant Chemical Engineers in the Bureau of Fire Prevention. Reporting directly to the Assistant Deputy Director, the successful candidates will: Review plans, technical reports and testing, and consult with management-level staff to support policy-making decisions. Prepare oral and written reports for review. Conduct examinations and prepare written responses. Engage in studies or investigations related to fire suppression systems, to determine design feasibility. Research the New York City Construction Codes and Fire Code; Rules of the City of New York, National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and Factory Mutual (FM) standards. Confer with engineers, architects and others in matters relating to the assigned projects. Participate in meetings with Industry representatives, City, State and Federal officials. Provide expert technical support to the bureau head and executive officials. Represent the Fire Department on Administrative Codes revision committees. In addition to above listed Technology Management duties, each assistant chemical engineer will work in Engineering plan examination sub-unit or Sustainability sub-unit respectively. Perform difficult and complex review of engineering submissions under requirements of FC105.4 and other applicable NYC Rules and Regulations activities of the Fire Department. Review highly technical non-water fire suppression system installation submittals, including clean agent, carbon dioxide, aerosol, dry chemical and foam systems. Review or examine plans for emerging technologies, including Battery Energy Storage System (ESS), Co-Generation plants, Hydrogen Fuel Dispensing Facilities, Elevator smoke curtains, etc. Perform related duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications


1. A baccalaureate degree in chemical engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in chemical engineering work; or

2. a baccalaureate degree in chemical engineering from an accredited college and a master’s degree in chemical engineering from an accredited college.

A master’s degree in chemical engineering from an accredited college can only be used to substitute for one year of full-time satisfactory work experience in chemical engineering.

Preferred Skills

Knowledge in NYC Codes and Standards, including NYC Building and Fire Code, and NFPA Standards. At least 1 year of experience in plan examination review. Excellent written and communication skills.
