What weather radar is most accurate? ›

The WSR-88D is one of the most powerful and advanced Weather Surveillance Doppler Radar in the world. Since first being built and tested in 1988, it has been installed and used operationally at over 160 locations across the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii.

A Doppler radar is a specialized radar that uses the Doppler effect to produce velocity data about objects at a distance. It does this by bouncing a microwave signal off a desired target and analyzing how the object's motion has altered the frequency of the returned signal.

For example, the network of weather radars in the USA (Table 1) emit microsecond-duration pulses of microwaves in the band from 2.7×10⁹ to 3.0×10⁹ Hz. The exact frequency of the radiation from a radar depends on the availability of spectrum space at the radar site.

Pulse-Doppler typically uses medium pulse repetition frequency (PRF) from about 3 kHz to 30 kHz. The range between transmit pulses is 5 km to 50 km. Range and velocity cannot be measured directly using medium PRF, and ambiguity resolution is required to identify true range and speed.
